ECLAIRE sessions at the General Assembly 2015, 12-17th April in Vienna, Austria

ECLAIRE is co-organising two sessions at the General Assembly 2015, 12-17th April in Vienna, Austria, on the biosphere-atmosphere exchange of trace gases and aerosols. These are particularly relevant for work of ECLAIRE in Components 1 and 3. The deadline for abstracts is 7 Jan 2015, 13:00 CET.

We encourage submission of contributions based on measurements and/or modeling carried out at subcellular to global scales to improve our understanding of processes behind BVOC emission, transformation and deposition in pristine and polluted terrestrial/marine ecosystems including the feedbacks between BVOCs, climate change and atmospheric chemistry.

The terrestrial biosphere (vegetation and soil) is an important source and/or sink for reactive air constituents contributing to chemical processes in the atmosphere. These relatively short-lived compounds include ozone, oxidized and reduced nitrogen and sulphur compounds, volatile organic compounds (VOC) as well as aerosols. They are important for air quality with potential impacts on ecosystems through dry and wet deposition (nutrients or toxic effect) or on human health. Some compounds also have a direct or indirect effect on the atmosphere radiative properties.

The exchange of reactive atmospheric compounds with the biosphere is more complex than for inert trace gases because it is influenced by biological, chemical (homogeneous and heterogeneous), surface sorption, and turbulent transfer processes within and above the vegetation canopy that can act on similar time scales. Due to these complex interactions as well as due to instrumental and methodological difficulties in concentration and flux measurements, there exist major uncertainties associated with the description, quantification and modelling of the processes controlling the surface-atmosphere exchange of reactive trace gases and aerosols.

The session is addressed to experimentalists and modelers working on land surface fluxes and exchange processes on the leaf, ecosystem, regional, and continental scale. It is open to a wide range of studies including the development and application of new devices, methods, and model approaches as well as field observations and process studies. Presentations concerning all types of reactive compounds and (semi-) natural or agricultural ecosystems are welcome.

AGRICULTURE AND CLIMATE: ADAPTING CROPS TO INCREASED UNCERTAINTY

15 - 17 February 2015, NH Grand Krasnapolsky Hotel, Amsterdam, The Netherlands

Maintaining crop production to feed a growing population during a period of climate change is the greatest challenge we face as a species.

The increasing crop yields during the Green Revolution in the last century were brought about mostly through the application of chemical fertilisers and pesticides (and during an uncommon period of climate stability). Yield increases have slowed and may go into decline as the world runs out of sources of phosphate and fossil energy used to produce nitrate fertilisers. New approaches to yield improvement are desperately needed to produce more climate resilient crops.

This conference will focus on the likely impact of climate change on crop production and explore approaches to maintain and increase crop productivity in the face of climate change.

The Seventh Non-CO2 Greenhouse Gases Symposium

The seventh Non-CO2 Greenhouse Gases Symposium (NCGG7) will be organized between the 5-7th of November 2014 in Amsterdam, with a focus on “Innovations for a Sustainable Future”. Four themes are discussed: (1) Innovation and Integration, (2) Sources, Sinks and Inventories, (3) Atmospheric Processes and (4) Policy Implementation. We welcome participants from science, policy and economic sectors (industry, agriculture, transport).

The early bird registration fee is available until the 1st of May. Please note that the call for papers is now closed.

EGU Special session on "Nitrogen cycling in forest landscapes" (Vienna 2014) - deadline 16th January

European Geosciences Union 2014 – Special session on “Nitrogen cycling in forest landscapes” (BG2.13)

Description of the session:

Forests cover 31% of the world’s total land area, and provide renewable resources that are increasin16th!gly being tapped to meet basic human needs. In many forest landscapes, nitrogen (N) is the nutrient that limits net primary production. In recent years, members of the Terrestrial Biogeosciences community have made exciting new advances for understanding the factors controlling N cycling in forest landscapes. As we progressively learn more, we come to realize the importance of applying this new knowledge in the context of climate change and human activities.

The proposed session encourages submissions from all aspects of research dealing with Nitrogen Cycling in Forest Landscapes, such as (1) organic and mineral N dynamics in forest soils, (2) N nutrition by trees and understory plants, (3) hotspots of N fixation in various forest strata , (4) N forms and availabilities during forest succession, (5) the effects of natural and anthropogenic disturbances on N cycling in forest landscapes. The session is intended to attract a broad international participation, and to foster scientific interactions and collaborations among individuals and established research networks.

Please note the following points:

The deadline for Abstract submissions is January 16th, 2014 (13:00 CET).
Conference fees include free public transportation in Vienna during the whole week, enabling attendees to stay anywhere in Vienna that they choose.
Oral sessions are comprised of 15 minute talks, and are complemented by poster presentations.
Posters may be electronically sent in advance to the EGU organization committee (e.g., PowerPoint or PDF file), who will print and hand them over to you upon registration.
The team of conveners will try to organize a supper in some restaurant during the week, to foster social and professional interactions among participants. If there is interest, it is also possible for us to organize a business lunch during the week in order to develop strategic actions to move the science forward.

ECLAIRE Database downtime this weekend November 16th & 17th

We are upgrading and patching the Oracle installation which will mean the ECLAIRE and NEU databases will be offline for the duration. It's due to be shutdown around 4pm Friday and should be back in service by Monday morning.
